Case picking directly from pallets can be enhanced in a variety of ways in order to increase operator speed and efficiency, and also responsiveness and throughput. Solutions include automated replenishment of pick positions, dynamic retrieval of pallets, and even negative picking and automated layer picking.

Automated Replenishment

Pallet AS/RS systems can be designed to output directly to picking positions, eliminating manual pallet movements. With an AS/RS system this can be on one or more levels. Alternatively this functionality can be achieved with pallet conveyor or transfer car technology.

Goods-to-Picker Systems

Typically DCs with a large number of slow moving SKUs are picked using dynamic or Goods-to-Picker systems. In these cases, pallets are retrieved each time they need a pick, and returned to storage after the pick has been made.

Negative picking is the principle of picking off a pallet and using the reminder as the first part of a new order. The diagram shows the Negative Pick Maximiser (NPM) concept, which is based on a system of pallet conveyor, a software module and a voice system. In the right circumstances, the NPM concept can effectively increase an operator's rate to perhaps 800 picks per hour - a significant increase for a relatively small investment.

Layer pickers can be stand alone, or else connected to a pallet AS/RS system. They pick individual layers from a donor pallet, and load onto an order pallet. The order pallet can be made of several SKUs.
