Dematic began operations in Australia in 1966 as Colby Handling Systems, founded by logistics industry legend Gerry Hatton. Colby became renowned as an innovative storage solutions provider and further developed by taking on the licence to manufacture Rapistan conveyors.
Both Colby and Rapistan were acquired by global materials handling giant Mannesmann Demag in the early 1990’s. The business developed rapidly with an expansion into AS/RS solutions and a diversification into software and real time picking.
Dematic was subsequently sold to Siemens, the world’s largest supplier of automated logistics solutions. In 2006 Siemens divested the Dematic business to European private equity investor Triton. Today Dematic is a major global logistics systems supplier with an extensive local presence in ANZ.
